I am confused on locking a page?[edit]

Hi,

This page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlton_Floate has been routinely attacked and harassed.. I have read the page on requesting a page to be locked (I think it should be locked after this edit: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Charles_Floate&oldid=776175266 )

I did not request this page be made, one of your editor's made it about me!

If you cannot lock this page, then please delete it. I do not consent for the page to be routinely vandalized like it has been.

One of your editor's even said I was convicted of INDECENT images of children, which is untrue.. I was convicted of restricted images of an ex girlfriend when I was just 18 years old! — Preceding unsigned comment added by CharlesFloate (talkcontribs) 00:15, 31 May 2017 (UTC)

Marie Cosindas. Tried to correct the year of birth for my deceased aunt. Got ref content error.[edit]

Tried to correct the year of birth for my deceased aunt, Marie Cosindas. Got ref content error. Since you won't accept her own family's word on this, I included additional proof with a ref to the LDS FamilySearch site, entered as [1] No idea what I did incorrectly.

Did you deliberately intend to include each line of the text of your question inside comment markers to stop us reading it? --David Biddulph (talk) 01:17, 31 May 2017 (UTC)

No. As you can see, I tried to format my text the same as others have. Could you possibly answer my question? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.20.208.169 (talk) 01:22, 31 May 2017 (UTC)

The text <ref>https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KLLB-P74</ref> you included only in your edit summary, not as a citation in the article. In the article you added an empty reference string <ref></ref>, which is why it was flagged as an error. Potential hate speech / vandalism on a talk page[edit]

I'm not sure what the protocol is for addressing the kind of comments made here. I wish, simply, that there was a way for me to request other editors not to engage in this person's rant. I'm afraid of what it might become. In my opinion, the best-case scenario would be for it to be ignored or removed. Again, however, I'm not sure what the norm is for such a situation. Suggestions? Thanks. Wolfdog (talk) 01:32, 31 May 2017 (UTC) (P.S. I see that Oshwah may have been involved with a similar situation with this same user in the past.)

You can delete it if you want to. It's sufficiently annoying and nonsensical that it'd be justified. Talk page comments are supposed to be to help improve the article, and this isn't that helpful as a practical fact, it's just a rant. I didn't delete it because it does bear on the subject of the article and I don't like to erase other people's opinions into the memory hole, if I can avoid it. Some stuff goes over the line of nonsense or incendiary insults. Another editor might delete. It's OK if you want to.
I wouldn't worry about it too much. It's the encyclopedia anyone can edit, not the encyclopedia anyone can edit who's not an annoying jerk. Just ignoring him might be best. Herostratus (talk) 01:49, 31 May 2017 (UTC)
I think Herostratus's response to the rant is appropriate. Whereas deleting the rant would only encourage the ranter. Maproom (talk) 08:21, 31 May 2017 (UTC)
Thanks, both of you. Wolfdog (talk) 20:26, 1 June 2017 (UTC)

Wrong Picture on Michael Webb's Archigram Page[edit]

I am getting upset in that my own pictures of Michael Webb, my husband, aren't accepted by Wikipedia. Instead, there is a picture of him that is not him!!! It's another Michael Webb. I want his page deleted!!! Also, how does one cite a biography by the subject that isn't published. Do we have to publish his own biography scripted by himself??? I am very upset with Wikipedia. What a scam!! Please take his information off of Wikipedia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Webb_(architect) Take down this page!!!

Nancy Wozniak Webb nancywozniak@gmail.com — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nancywozniakwebb (talkcontribs) 04:26, 31 May 2017 (UTC)

Neither of our articles (Michael_Webb_(architect), Archigram) has an image. I suspect you may have been looking at the information box on Google ([1]). We have no control over Google's content. Rmhermen (talk) 05:31, 31 May 2017 (UTC)
@Nancywozniakwebb: See also Template:HD/GKG. The Wikipedia policy Wikipedia:Verifiability only allows published sources so editors and readers can find them somewhere and check what they say. A selfpublished source, for example on the subject's own website, can be used in limited cases. See Wikipedia:Verifiability#Self-published or questionable sources as sources on themselves. If you took a photo of him and own the copyright then it should be possible to upload it at commons:Special:UploadWizard if you will release it with a free license. What goes wrong? refs[edit]

Is there a way to add references to an article that might be too many, but might contain information that I might want to go back and add later, but in a way that wouldn't clutter up the article with too many refs? Benjamin (talk) 05:01, 31 May 2017 (UTC)

How to show archive entries on talk page[edit]

I am trying to insert a list of numerical entries and index in the archive section on the Talk:African-American Civil Rights Movement (1954–1968). For example, see Talk:Michael Jackson. Mitchumch (talk) 07:37, 31 May 2017 (UTC)

You need to get the archives moved first. The page title is Talk:African-American Civil Rights Movement (1954–1968) but the the talk page is being archived under Talk:African-American Civil Rights Movement (1954–68) - note the difference between 68 and 1968. I'd get that fixed first and move the archives, then get the indexing done. - X201 (talk) 09:06, 31 May 2017 (UTC)
There were 11 subpages at the old name. Administrators can include subpages in a move. I have moved them. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:33, 31 May 2017 (UTC)

Adding references from a hardcopy journal[edit]

I need to reference a page from a journal released by the Nigerian Government in 1956. 1.Is this journal considered as public domain material? 2.Can I upload a scanned image of the page or I have to write in and quote the actual statements referred to? 3.Do I still need permission from the Nigerian Government or Authority involved? Funkeleye (talk) 18:52, 31 May 2017 (UTC)

@Funkeleye: you neither can nor need to upload it. Sources don't need to be online. Simply cite it by identifying the name of the magazine, its publisher, the number/issue/year, the page number(s) you cite, and name of the author and article if applicable. That way others can find the same magazine for sale or in a library to verify your citation. – Finnusertop (talkcontribs) 19:35, 31 May 2017 (UTC)
@Funkeleye: use {{Cite journal}} to cite from journals. Mjroots (talk) 18:41, 2 June 2017 (UTC)

deleted page/banned editor[edit]

hi there. i've noticed that a wiki page has been deleted. i asked and got a response from the person who deleted it saying that it was due to a ban or blocked editor. i've learned that the ban or block needs to be addressed and i was wondering how to go about addressing the problem. i'm not sure what the exact reason is for the ban/block, but i'd love to know and settle any confusion and move forward with getting the page back up the correct way. what would be the next step? any advice would be greatly appreciated.

thanks!

Wrong Information[edit]

Hello,

On the page: Olympiacos_F.C.

about Olympiacos FC, there is an error.

Under the section: "Statistics" / "Greek Championship records" / "Undefeated Champions" it is stated:

"6 (1936–37, 1937–38, 1947–48, 1950–51, 1953–54, 1954–55, 2015-16)"

This is wrong. It should read: "4 (1936–37, 1937–38, 1947–48, 1950–51, 1953–54)" since Olympiacos had only 4 undefeated seasons. They had 1 loss in the season 1954–55 and also 1 loss in the season 2015-16 as per pages:

1954–55 Panhellenic Championship

and

2015-16 Superleague Greece

Thank you very much for your consideration. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 131.137.245.206 (talk) 19:19, 31 May 2017 (UTC)

Well observed. You may want to make the change yourself. If you don't want to, you may want to make a note that effect on the talk page for the article at Talk:Olympiacos_F.C.Naraht (talk) 19:29, 31 May 2017 (UTC)
Don't you mean "3 (1936–37, 1937–38, 1950–51)" or is there a season I missed?--S Philbrick(Talk) 22:53, 31 May 2017 (UTC)

RE: Wrong Information[edit]

Thank you very much for your reply,

First, I cannot make any change myself since the page: Olympiacos_F.C.

is locked and there is no "Edit" option.

It should be:

"4 (1936–37, 1937–38, 1947–48, 1950–51, 1953–54)"

and not:

"6 (1936–37, 1937–38, 1947–48, 1950–51, 1953–54, 1954–55, 2015-16)"

as it is stated now

or as you stated:

"3 (1936–37, 1937–38, 1950–51)".

So please make the correction to have it displayed as:

"4 (1936–37, 1937–38, 1947–48, 1950–51, 1953–54)"

Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 131.137.245.206 (talk) 15:26, 1 June 2017 (UTC)

This is about Olympiacos F.C.#Greek Championship records. As the OP has provided no source, and I cannot easily check the facts, I shan't be making the edit myself. Maproom (talk) 17:09, 1 June 2017 (UTC)

Re: Wrong Information[edit]

My request has still not been resolved.

Here are the references that you asked:

1954–55 Panhellenic Championship

and

2015-16 Superleague Greece

It should read: "4 (1936–37, 1937–38, 1947–48, 1950–51, 1953–54)" since Olympiacos had only 4 undefeated seasons. They had 1 loss in the season 1954–55 and also 1 loss in the season 2015-16 as per pages:

Please make the corrections. I cannot make the corrections since the page is locked.

Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 131.137.245.206 (talk) 13:40, 2 June 2017 (UTC)

Please post your suggested change with citations to a published reliable source on the article's talk page. You can add {{edit request}} (with the double curly brackets) to get your request put on a list of pending requests. The "references" you have given above are not citations: they give me no hint of what publications to look in for the information, or where in that publication. Please see Referencing for beginners. --ColinFine (talk) 16:31, 2 June 2017 (UTC)

The following page was possibly vandalized. How can it be fixed?[edit]

This page:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Best_Animated_Feature_Academy_Award_winners

contains an entry for:

Home Alone (short film)

which links to:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Home_Alone_(short_film)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Home_Alone_%28short_film%29

But this film -- despite my lengthy google-search -- appears not to exist.

Ergo, this may be a hoax / vandalization.

Clicking the edit tab did not give me the option to edit that part of the page.

What can be done?

Thanks.

PUE — Preceding unsigned comment added by Peace Upon Earth (talkcontribs) 21:06, 31 May 2017 (UTC)

@Peace Upon Earth: The page Home Alone (short film) has been nominated for speedy deletion as a hoax or invention. Please sign your posts on talk pages by typing four tildes (~~~~). Thank you. Eagleash (talk) 21:17, 31 May 2017 (UTC)
PS for future reference, Wiki articles are included in category pages by adding the category to the article page. See the list of cats. at the bottom of Wiki pages (even this talk page). These are added or removed by clicking edit or by use of several available 'tools' E.g. WP:HOTCAT. Eagleash (talk) 21:27, 31 May 2017 (UTC)
The odd fact here is that the hoax article was created only a couple of days ago, but the entry which links to it has been there for more than ten years. Is there a genuine Home Alone short film? Dbfirs 21:25, 31 May 2017 (UTC)
It's copied from http://parody.wikia.com/wiki/Home_Alone, a wiki that encourages contributors to make up spoofs. Which entry linking to it are you referring to? If you mean Category:Best Animated Feature Academy Award winners then pages are placed in categories by editing the page and not the category, but an experienced editor should know that. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:42, 31 May 2017 (UTC)
I also found it odd that, if you view the page history for Category:Best Animated Feature Academy Award winners the entry appears in versions from 2006. Is there something different about 'past versions' when it come to categories?Eagleash (talk) 22:51, 31 May 2017 (UTC)
It's not the version of the category page which governs which articles are displayed within the category. That is governed by which articles include the category. --David Biddulph (talk) 23:32, 31 May 2017 (UTC)
So that's a 'yes' then? Item will appear in 'old' versions, even though the page was only recently placed in the category. Eagleash (talk) 00:10, 1 June 2017 (UTC)
Yes, all revisions of category pages show the current members, like all revisions of wiki pages show the current templates and styling. The Internet Archive at https://archive.org/ sometimes have snapshots of how pages really looked at the time. Their snapshots of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Best_Animated_Feature_Academy_Award_winners does not show the recent addition Home Alone (short film). PrimeHunter (talk) 00:23, 1 June 2017 (UTC)
Thanks. Makes sense; never had occasion to think about it before. Eagleash (talk) 00:46, 1 June 2017 (UTC)

Search engines adding a "www" to wikipage[edit]

Does anyone know why search engines are adding a www in front of a wiki page? Michele Ragusa - Wikipedia https://www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michele_Ragusa

I contacted Google and they said it is a Wiki issue. Pages just begin with the "en" so when you click the link it says: This site can’t be reached

www.en.wikipedia.org’s server DNS address could not be found. DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN

Any thoughts would be so appreciated. Thank you! Parplaywright (talk) 21:13, 31 May 2017 (UTC)

@Parplaywright: I cannot reproduce your problem. The search https://www.google.com/search?q=Michele+Ragusa+-+Wikipedia works fine for me with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michele_Ragusa as the first result. Exactly where does it happen? Are you searching at a website or from a browser feature? What is your browser? Please post a link to the site where it happens and the specific search where it happens. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:06, 31 May 2017 (UTC)

I'm searching simply "Michele Ragusa" from my laptop (PC) and using either Chrome or Microsoft Edge i go to search bar and the result comes up with a www added to the wiki page. Is it possible it's a cookies issue or something else strictly on my computer? I tried to clear the cache but maybe I need to do something else. Thanks for checking from where you are. Appreciate it PrimeHunter Parplaywright (talk) 23:20, 31 May 2017 (UTC)

@Parplaywright: You said you contacted Google so I assumed it was a Google search but Microsoft Edge uses Microsoft's own Bing (search engine) by default. You didn't link the search but I guess it was a Bing search because I can reproduce the result in Bing: https://www.bing.com/search?q=Michele+Ragusa+-+Wikipedia gives me https://www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michele_Ragusa. I don't know why they have www in the address. The little green triangle shows their cache from allegedly visiting the page. Their cache lacks the styling found in working Wikipedia pages including their cache of pages at https://en.wikipedia.org. This might indicate it is a Wikipedia server problem, sometimes serving bad pages on bad url's. The Bing search site:www.en.wikipedia.org says 12.200 results. We have five million articles and millions of other pages. site:en.wikipedia.org says 46.600.000 results so the problem sounds relatively small by our standards but of course annoying for the affected users. Google gives 0 results for site:www.en.wikipedia.org and says about 12.800.000 for site:en.wikipedia.org. Bing powers Yahoo search which also shows the problem. I will soon post it to Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#Bing gives broken www.en.wikipedia.org results. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:58, 31 May 2017 (UTC)

How do I properly merge the dissolved village Lake Mykee Town, Missouri into Holts Summit, Missouri?[edit]

I attempted it, but it was reverted because I did it wrong somehow? What did I do wrong? 184.6.88.18 (talk) 09:19, 1 June 2017 (UTC)

As far as I can tell from the article histories, you didn't merge the articles, you redirected Lake Mykee Town, Missouri to point to Holts Summit, Missouri. In doing so you completely removed the information in the former article from the active database. The subject of an article doesn't lose notability if it no longer exists. If the village is no longer extant, just note that fact, with a supporting reference. Rojomoke (talk) 09:28, 1 June 2017 (UTC)
(edit conflict)This was answered at Talk:Lake Mykee Town, Missouri#Merger proposal. There was insufficient time allowed for any discussion. You opened the proposal discussion and closed it 10 minutes later. As an 'involved' editor, technically you should not have been the one to close the discussion, certainly not after such a short period of time. I am not sure whether you read the instructions at WP:MERGEPROP and WP:FMERGE but you should do so (if you have not already) before trying again. If the merger proposal is accepted by the community, following the instructions should ensure that there are no problems. Eagleash (talk) 09:36, 1 June 2017 (UTC)
In addition, Rojomoke is correct in that notability does not cease to exist because a settlement has been absorbed into a different administrative area. Towns which became part of Greater London in 1965, for example, do not redirect to the GL page. Eagleash (talk) 09:43, 1 June 2017 (UTC)

@2A02:C7D:CA69:5200:B85C:1178:36EB:2E82: It would help if you could provide a link to the page in question. However, you have little, if any, control over what any Wiki page contains. Wikipedia articles are based upon what has been written about the subject in independent reliable sources (any unsourced material is likely to be deleted). As you have a conflict of interest, you can make editing suggestions at the article talk page, but you should not edit the article itself. You would need to provide reliable sources to support the changes you wish to make. An article would only be deleted if certain criteria are fulfilled. Eagleash (talk) 13:41, 1 June 2017 (UTC)
Hi Martin. If you are a truly public figure, of assured notability, then the article is not likely to be taken down solely because you wish it so. But if you are not, then see WP:BLPREQUESTDELETE. However, any unsourced or poorly sourced information in an article on a living person can be removed by anyone, including you, immediately. As above, we can offer only very general advice without knowing which article this is about.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 21:46, 1 June 2017 (UTC)

For example can I use this [2] as a reference in his article? I am concerned as I have a feeling that it may be a primary source. RRD13 দেবজ্যোতি (talk) 18:52, 1 June 2017 (UTC)

error in Larry Pratt[edit]

This is a factually inaccurate statement: In 1994, Pratt unsuccessfully ran for a seat in the Nevada State Assembly as a Libertarian, winning 27% of the vote.[7]. I have never been on the ballot in Nevada (only in VA). Larry Pratt <contact details redacted> 70.168.132.246 (talk) 20:45, 1 June 2017 (UTC)

I see that the statement is sourced to http://www.boogieonline.com. That doesn't look to me like a reliable source – but I'll leave it to an American to judge. Maproom (talk) 20:51, 1 June 2017 (UTC)
I've removed it per exceptional. Lourdes 00:33, 2 June 2017 (UTC)

Too many Firefox version history charts[edit]

I have a problem. Lately, it seems that Rukario-sama keeps moving the Firefox version history chart from the History of Firefox article to the Firefox version history article and making a lot of duplicate reference links while breaking the References section. I mean, this is not right. Why does the "Firefox version history" article have too many version history charts?! Is Rukario-sama breaking the rules here? --Angeldeb82 (talk) 03:00, 2 June 2017 (UTC)

Is anyone listening to me? Why did Rukario-sama move the Firefox version history chart to the Firefox version history article and make a lot of duplicate reference links while breaking the References section? --Angeldeb82 (talk) 15:07, 2 June 2017 (UTC)
Angeldeb82, this looks like a content dispute. Have you tried discussing it on the talk page of the involved articles? It seems to me that this section is an invitation to discuss. TigraanClick here to contact me 15:16, 2 June 2017 (UTC)
Thanks. I'll try that. --Angeldeb82 (talk) 16:12, 2 June 2017 (UTC)

Converting money to 2015 prices[edit]

As an American I'm not familiar with British money, but would like to convert two shillings and sixpence British money of 1751 Colonial America to what it is equal to in 2015 dollars. Apparently there is a template that will convert this - not familiar with it. I want to use that template in the last line of an article I am upgrading to GA = Experiments_and_Observations_on_Electricity#Background. Thanks for help on the 2015 price conversion template.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 12:36, 2 June 2017 (UTC)

That link also provides a workaround, but you need to know the conversion factor between the two. Finally, I am not sure the inflation template has series going back to 1751, and the reason may be more complex than the template maintainers being lazy (I doubt inflation measurements with modern methodology are available for that time period). TigraanClick here to contact me 12:53, 2 June 2017 (UTC)
You are right that the template does not do currency conversion, but according to its documentation page, it is valid as far back as 1209 for British currency (not American though for obvious reasons). SpinningSpark 15:40, 2 June 2017 (UTC)

You will find advice at WP:Conflict of interest. --David Biddulph (talk) 14:23, 2 June 2017 (UTC)
Not without a section link, at least. @Aiothman: which changes are you asking for? Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 15:22, 2 June 2017 (UTC)
The article Saudi Arabia is under Extended Confirmed Protection. This is done to protect the article and its information. People who are unable to edit the article can request changes on the talk page. RJFJR (talk) 15:44, 2 June 2017 (UTC)
Hello, Dr Alothman. I'm afraid Wikipedia does not agree that the Ministry are the only source of information about Saudi. On the contrary, the principle applies to countries as much as to any other organisation, that Wikipedia has very little interest in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about itself, and is only interested in what independent people have published about the subject, in reliable organs. As others have said, you are welcome to make suggestions on the article's talk page for how it may be improved; but it is up to impartial editors to decide how far to accept your suggestions. --ColinFine (talk) 16:18, 2 June 2017 (UTC)

Scanned Images[edit]

I have a print of a formal portrait that I want to use for an Infobox. The image is from the family collection and it was taken sometime in the 1960's. The studio that took the picture no longer exists. Can I scan and upload this image? — Preceding unsigned comment added by MickieB (talkcontribs) 15:38, 2 June 2017 (UTC)

The image could be uploaded either on Wikimedia Commons if it can be released as public domain or under a suitable license. If not, it may still satisfy the non-free content criteria, and can be uploaded on Wikipedia (but not on Commons). Let us analyze the first possibility.
First thing to determine is whether the image has become public domain. I am also going to assuming the photograph was taken in the United States (by your contributions, I guess it is one of Robert E. Bourdeau). This could be the case if no copyright notice was included. If a copyright notice was included, the copyright is still running for some time in all cases, and you need permission from the copyright holder to release it.
If the photograph was work-for-hire, which sounds probable but I am not sure, the customer retains the rights - if this is from your family and you own the physical photograph by inheritance, you have the copyrights. Otherwise, the original copyright was with the studio, and just because it does not exist anymore does not mean the copyright disappeared; so in that case, no, you cannot upload it on Commons. Editing font[edit]

The font seems to have changed when I edit. I want it to be the same as when I read the article. How do I change it? Also, how do I find out what my "reading" font is currently? Clarityfiend (talk) 00:02, 3 June 2017 (UTC)

See Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#Change in font in edit window. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:27, 3 June 2017 (UTC)
I added the recommended line to my common.css, but that hasn't made any difference. Any other suggestions? Clarityfiend (talk) 11:22, 3 June 2017 (UTC)

Is this math rendering problem specific to me or is it general with Microsoft Edge?[edit]

.

.
.

On most browsers, I can use <small></small> to get smaller rendering of math markup. On Microsoft Edge, however, the rendering is not smaller, but is chopped to the side and below. Is this specific to my machine, or do other people see it? Is this a Microsoft Edge issue, or is it a Wikimedia issue? Stigmatella aurantiaca (talk) 02:31, 3 June 2017 (UTC)

Yes, I confirm this is a problem of Edge. Ruslik_Zero 10:30, 3 June 2017 (UTC)

Fair use for concert video recordings?[edit]

It seems pretty clear per c:Commons:Video#Videos and copyright that if one films part of a concert, the audio that may be copyrighted needs to be removed from the video in order for the rest of the video to be uploaded to Commons. But suppose I wanted to upload a short video of about 30 or less seconds as an indication of what a certain concert or festival is/was like, would it be ok to upload it here on English Wikipedia under a fair use licence? Greetings, Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 05:47, 3 June 2017 (UTC)

You can look at WP:NFCCP and decide whether all 10 criteria are satisfied. Ruslik_Zero 10:28, 3 June 2017 (UTC)

Britannica[edit]

Have all articles from Britannica been incorporated into wikipedia? Is there any bot etc that tracks article incorporation? I need this information for a project. FreeatlastChitchat (talk) 06:26, 3 June 2017 (UTC)

@FreeatlastChitchat: Encyclopædia Britannica Eleventh Edition from 1911 is the most recent edition which is out of copyright and allowed to copy in Wikipedia. Our article says it had 40,000 articles. Category:Wikipedia articles incorporating text from the 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica has 12,278 pages. The category is generally added by placing {{EB1911}} in the page.
